It’s everywhere. It’s yours. Megafaun’s new self-titled album is out today.

One look at that cover and we’re in Durham. We’re in Fall Creek. We’re in our backyard. We’re in Phil’s kitchen. We’re in a bar in Cincinnati. We’re in a van. We’re in the Columbia Gorge. We’re in Draplin’s studio. We’re walking in Venice with Joe. We’re watching the sunset on Brad’s front porch.

Megafaun is a new album on Hometapes, a striking 2xLP and CD that epitomizes everything we exist for: music + art and the wild collision between the two under our constantly-evolving care. We learn a hundred things every time we release a record…about ourselves, about our friends, about ink-on-paper, about type-on-screen. But this record: this is a mirror, a flag, a mountain. This is Bradley Cook, Joseph Westerlund, and Phillip Cook. And this is us. We love you guys for letting us in, and for letting us carve and install the very door we walked in through.

The first song you reveal from an album — from a band like Megafaun, from an album like Megafaun — says something. How do you tune the world to Phil Cook, Joe Westerlund, and Brad Cook, to the vastness of their minds, to the sheer nature of time?

Process, songcraft, and toss-and-turn emotion collided when Megafaun’s Joe Westerlund looped together field recordings from his travels in Bali and rural North Carolina: a round-robin of gamelan, ambient sounds, frogs, and cicadas underpin a hauntingly indelible piano melody and a hypnotic beat. Then there are the voices.

This song stopped us dead in our tracks, encapsulating the Megafaun we know and the Megafaun we’ve yet to hear. In between? Well, that’s Megafaun, out September 20, 2011.

The cover art was created by none other than Aaron Draplin.
